WDTC coordinates safety sensitive position drug testing

By: PRLog

GREEN BAY, Wis. - May 17, 2022 - PRLog -- Separate consortiums are required for DOT and non-DOT employees

The concept of drug and alcohol testing is obvious when it comes to CDL drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMV), but DOT regulations also stipulate safety sensitive position drug testing for a variety of roles outside of the cab. Wisconsin Drug Testing Consortium (WDTC) assists employers with fulfilling their drug and alcohol testing responsibilities for employees who fall under both the DOT and non-DOT umbrellas.

Safety sensitive position drug testing comes into play for a wide range of job functions, including those for drivers not behind the wheel in some cases. DOT regulations also include the time that drivers spend waiting to be dispatched unless they have been relieved from duty by the employer.

It is important to note this regulation also pertains to employees who may not drive as part of their regular job duties but are "eligible" to drive a CMV at any time, such as maintenance, salespeople, clerks, secretaries and supervisors.

Non-DOT employees still need potential impairment and post-accident testing

DOT regulations cover many types of employees, but not all of them. Safety sensitive position drug testing also pertains to non-DOT employees when their actions can impact their safety or that of others. For example, a worker does not require certification to drive a company vehicle under 26,000 pounds, or operate a forklift or manufacturing machinery, but they are safety-sensitive positions nonetheless.

Separate consortium contracts with WDTC to cover safety sensitive position drug testing for DOT and non-DOT employees is a worthy investment. Our network of 17,000 collection sites across the USA make it convenient to complete safety sensitive position drug testing.

We also have our own drug test collection sites in Oshkosh, Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin. A representative of the employer must transport the worker to the testing site in cases of potential impairment. If you prefer an on-site visit and are in our region, we can arrive at your location within about 90 minutes in cases of post-accident or reasonable suspicion for safety sensitive position drug testing.
