Local ENT Surgeon Mr. San Sunkaraneni Speaks About Septoplasty and some of his accomplishments in the field of ENT

In a recent post on his Guildford ENT website, local ENT surgeon Mr. San Sunkaraneni spoke about septoplasty: what it is and who can benefit from this treatment.
Mr. San Sunkaraneni starts by defining the nasal septum: it is the midline partition of the nose that divides the nasal cavity into a right and left side.
Deviations, also known as twists of the septum, can be caused by injuries; however, in many cases, patients don’t actually recall any trauma, leading to no known cause of the issue. In this instance, the septum may simply have become buckled during the particular individual’s growth stages.
The post also notes that septal deviations of this nature cause breathing problems for sufferers. It mentions that conservative methods of treatment, such as steroid sprays and nasal spirits, are worth checking out, but if a patient is troubled by their symptoms, surgery is often required to straighten out the septum.
This operation is known as septoplasty. It is usually performed under general anaesthetic and can take around 45 minutes to complete. The specific risks involved in this procedure include perforation of the septum or a change in the shape of the nose.
Mr San Sunkaraneni is a Consultant Rhinologist/ENT surgeon who works at the Guildford Nuffield Hospital and Mount Alvernia Hospital. He provides both an out-patient and in-patient (surgery) service, as well as carrying out local anaesthetic ‘office’ procedures. He provides a regional service for Surrey, London, Sussex and Hampshire and also receives referrals from all over the UK through Guildford ENT.
With research interests in nasal and sinus disease, Mr Sunkaraneni is Principal Investigator on a national multi-centre research programme looking at the causes of sinusitis and new treatments for it. He peer reviews research papers for scientific journals and has lectured at major conferences in the UK and North America. He has also been appointed as Visiting Senior Fellow at the University of Surrey.
