The DITP introduces a Thai home-grown television genre to the global market – the Series ‘Y’

By: Get News

Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of commerce has spearheaded a mission to identify new industries with skills, talents, and growth potential, so that appropriate government support can be given to grow their international market. The digital content industry is one area which has seen enormous growth over the past decade and still has significant potential to expand further.

In investigating areas of digital content production which have seen accelerated growth, the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce identified a very clear trend of popularity for the Series ‘Y’.

Series ‘Y’ were originally inspired by Japanese comics, and began in Thailand as serialized fiction. But when these stories were adapted for television, they quickly became a social media sensation.

Series ‘Y’ also known as ‘BL’ or ‘Boys’ Love’ series are mainly PG-rated romantic comedies which focus on the romance between cute and often chic young men. They have attracted an avid audience, primarily, but not exclusively of young women. One factor that has boosted their popularity is that their fans tend to be very active on social media, posting their thoughts, wishes, and questions and further raising their profile.

In the last two years, the value of the Boys’ Love Series genre exceeded one billion Baht, and over 40 titles have been produced, with another 90 expected this year.

The phenomenon has started to spread. There have already been licensing deals in many other Asian territories including Taiwan and Japan. Latin America has also acquired rights.

The cancellation of in-person trade shows and markets has disrupted the international marketing plans of Thai digital content producers, and the DITP has found innovative ways to use technology to create virtual business matching platforms.

The DITP has announced the launch of Thai Boys’ Love Content (TBLC) – the first ever online business event to promote Thai Boys’ Love Content.

Taking place on 29th and 30th June 2021, it will assemble ten key producers:
