ABOUT SHIKARI SHAMBU
By profession, Shambu is a conservationist and a wildlife expert. Given his profession, he also dabbles in wildlife photography. Whether it is for rescuing a wild animal or catching a dangerous poacher, he is everybody's go-to guy. The catch is Shambu is no brave heart. He is secretly petrified of animals and has no love for adventure. All he seeks is a good, fluffy pillow to sleep on and enough food to satisfy his enormous appetite. Thankfully, he is also the luckiest person alive, always managing to escape trouble through sheer good fortune!
Shambu was created by Luis Fernandes and Vasant Halbe in 1983 as Tinkle's answer to Target Magazine's Detective Moochwala, drawn by Ajit Ninan. The story, 'The Legend of Shikari Shambu' that appeared in Tinkle Magazine #573, talks about the first time Shambu caught a tiger, completely by accident of course, after which he was christened 'Shikari' by onlookers. Over the years, Shambu has given up his gun and has switched to something a little more family-friendly to shoot animals with i.e. a camera! For the past two years, Shambu has been on a world tour of sorts, visiting various countries and helping out the locals with their wildlife problems. Shambu's stories are currently scripted by various members of the Tinkle editorial team and are illustrated by Group Art Director Savio Mascarenhas. In fact, Mr. Mascarenhas has been illustrating Shambu's adventures for more than twenty years now!
Tinkle has been India's formative children's magazine for the last 41 years. That's nearly four generations of children we have been reaching out to regularly for almost four decades. Tinkle's unique brand of 'learning meets fun' is the reason behind its strong and loyal following among readers of all ages in India, especially children.
Every week, the dedicated editorial team at Tinkle put together digital magazines that compile comic stories, fact sheets, and features on a variety of topics from sports to craft to science that inspires and informs young minds. Tinkle provides an all-around experience that encourages reading, improves language skills and general knowledge, and sparks curiosity within the reader. Children love Tinkle's classic characters- Suppandi, the hilarious simpleton; Shikari Shambu, with his adventures in the jungle; and Tantri the evil Mantri, among many others. Over the years, Tinkle has added a bunch of newer characters to its roster as well, such as the Defective Detectives - a pair of Mumbai preteens who are the biggest conspiracy theorists around, WingStar - a 13-year-old superhero from the North East, and the students of NOIS, a quaint boarding school in the Nilgiris with a cast of eclectic characters and mysteries all around! These characters have now firmly entrenched themselves in India's pop cultural landscape with many celebrity fans as well.
