Fort Lauderdale, Florida May 6, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - The month of May is often associated with the beginning of the summer season and the warmer weather brings large numbers of people to the water; backyard pools, beaches, waterfronts, and public aquatic facilities. Unfortunately, the month of May also signals an increase in drowning tragedies across our nation.  Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children between ages 1-4. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 10 drowning deaths per day occur in the USA. Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. Most of those drownings occur in home swimming pools. WAVE Drowning Detection Systems (WAVE), a state-of-the-art drowning detection system, today announces the launch of its commercial and residential systems in South Florida just in time for National Drowning Prevention Awareness Month in May.

WAVE works by measuring how long each swimmer's head is underwater and provides alerts when a swimmer has been under too long. There are headbands that go around the back of the swimmer's head or units that can clip onto goggles. For non-swimmers like toddlers, elders, or even pets, "Buddy Tags" clip onto swimsuits, clothing, or pet collars, and alarm instantly on entering the water. Users can program the device with different time settings.

Mark Caron, Co-Founder & CEO of WAVE Systems said, "We are excited to launch WAVE in South Florida, there's swimming here all year-round. Drowning rates have not been declining. WAVE can fix the problem, and that's what we are here to do."

Drowning Prevention Begins with Layers of Protection:

  • ALWAYS know where children are. Never leave a child unattended in or near water in a pool, tub, lake, river, canal, or ocean, even when lifeguards are present.
  • ALWAYS be aware of potential dangers in all environments, such as when away from home. Never leave your child in an environment with unprotected water hazards.
  • If a child is missing, always check the pool or spa first.
  • Keep anything that can be climbed, such as chairs, tables, storage bins, playground equipment, ice chests, etc. inside the fenced area.
  • All doors providing direct access from the home to the swimming pool should be equipped with a self-closing, self-latching device with a release mechanism placed no lower than 54 inches above the floor.
  • Anyone with a pool, a boat, or who goes to a lake or the beach should have a WAVE system.

Over the last year, the WAVE system has been deployed at larger community pools, YMCAs and school pools around the country, In Southwest Florida, WAVE has partnered with the Collier County Drowning Prevention Coalition (sponsored by NCH Safe & Healthy Children's Coalition) to help speed the deployment of WAVE drowning detection systems throughout Collier County.  As part of the initiative, WAVE will provide the Coalition with up to $100,000 of credits to be allocated to local community pools for purchasing drowning detection systems.

Additionally, WAVE has partnered with the national non-profit ACTION2ENDDROWNING, Inc. and has committed up to $10 million of their profits over the next ten years to help this 501(c)3 non-profit bring drowning awareness, education, and WAVE technology to under-privileged and culturally challenged communities throughout South Florida and the nation.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children in the US, with the fatality rate stuck at nearly 1,000 drownings per year for decades.  In addition to fatalities, thousands of children are hospitalized each year, with many suffering brain or lung injuries.
