UNCF College Tour Stops in Cincinnati, Awarding Local Students Thousands in College Scholarships

Hundreds of students expected to attend the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour
CINCINNATI - Oct. 8, 2018 - PRLog -- Hundreds of Cincinnati high school graduating seniors will be given the opportunity to apply for thousands of dollars in scholarships on Tuesday, October 23rdat the Duke Energy Convention Center during the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Empower Me Tour (EMT). EMT is a free, traveling college-and-career-readiness roadshow that provides a platform for high school students to earn on-site scholarships and admission to the nation's top historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

UNCF is the largest scholarship provider to students of color, awarding $100 million annually in scholarships to more than 10,000 students across the country. "My freshman year, I was trying to find ways to help pay for my tuition," says Cincinnati native Kennedi Phillips. "My mom was unemployed and my dad was trying to hold on. It was a stressful situation. I started filling out scholarships and earning the UNCF award helped me to be able to stay at Tuskegee (University)." Phillips, a graduate of LaKota West High School, has hopes of becoming an entrepreneur. She and her friends launched C.A.K.E.S (Cute and Keen, Especially Sexy), a clothing line to encouraged girls to be their best self. "Our brand inspires girls to feel confident in what they wear," says the 20-year-old. "We want to raise their self-esteem, and let them know that they are beautiful in every way," she adds. Phillips, a business major, also has hopes to work in human resource management.

"As the program's founding sponsor, we are tremendously proud of how far EMT has come over the past 10 years. Our team members across the country are looking forward to another year of supporting thousands of deserving students in their pursuit of higher education through volunteerism and mentoring," says Jimmie Paschall, Executive Vice President, Enterprise Diversity & Inclusion and Strategic Philanthropy at Wells Fargo.  Through partnerships with Cincinnati school districts, parents, national sponsors Wells Fargo, Target, P&G and FedEx, and local sponsors, EMT offers access to information and recruiters from HBCUs, college prep workshops, dynamic presenters, and award-winning educational experts. Students will have an opportunity to apply for college admission, financial aid and scholarships including the EMT Merit Scholarship, presented in partnership with Target on the spot.

The EMT is Tuesday, October 23rdat 8:30 a.m. at Duke Energy Center, 525 Elm Street, Cincinnati, OH.
