AIT Bridges announces the hiring of new President and Chief Engineer

By: PRLog
PRLog - Jul 15, 2013 - ORONO, Maine -- Advanced Infrastructure Technologies, Inc. ("AIT Bridges"), supplier of corrosion-free composite arch bridges, today announced that Kenneth L. Sweeney P.E. has joined the Company as its President and Chief Engineer. Mr. Sweeney recently retired from the Maine Department of Transportation("MaineDOT") as Chief Engineer, having served 35 years at MaineDOT.

Mr. Sweeney is a recognized leader in Maine and across the U.S. While Chief Engineer of the Department, he has successfully implemented new technologies, processes, and materials with a focus of improving the quality of transportation infrastructure. In addition to his work at MaineDOT, Ken is a national leader serving over 10 years as an active member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Highways, the Standing Committee on Research, and was recently Chair of the AASHTO Technology Implementation Group.

"AIT Bridges have a truly unique product offering with this corrosion-resistant construction application. This durable bridge design protects the structure from day one, lowering future maintenance costs while increasing durability and safety. The idea of protecting our infrastructure beginning at the design phase is gaining popularity, AIT Bridges are ideal for building longer lasting bridges" said Mr. Sweeney.

Composite arch bridges have been built in Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and the Caribbean with upcoming designs in multiple states and counties. AIT Bridges are well suited for single and multiple span crossings up to 75 feet with significant savings on skewed geometries compared to steel and precast concrete. The lightweight nature of the arches is perfect for locations where it isn’t feasible or practical to bring in heavy construction equipment. Rapid design and fabrication allows AIT Bridges to help reduce project timelines. AIT Bridges can go from drawings to job site delivery in as few as 30 days.

"MaineDOT has been at the forefront of transportation innovation for many years. Ken brings engineering expertise, seasoned leadership, and national recognition to AIT. With our design code published by AASHTO in January and Ken now joining us, a new chapter of AIT Bridges is beginning. We are thrilled to welcome Ken to the team," stated Brit E. Svoboda, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AIT Bridges.

Mr. Sweeney concluded, "After 35 years at MaineDOT, I am excited with this leadership role at AIT Bridges as we target a full-scale national rollout of the product."

ABOUT AIT Bridges

AIT Bridges (www.aitbridges.com) builds corrosion-resistant structures. This innovative construction uses hollow composite arches that are filled with concrete on-site to serve as the main structural supports of a bridge. The arch shell acts as an external reinforcement layer but also protects concrete from harmful environmental and corrosive elements lowering future maintenance costs of the structure. Design code for composite arch bridges was published by AASHTO in January of 2013.

The AASHTO design code coupled with numerous constructability improvements and competitive pricing has made composite arch bridges a compelling alternative to traditional precast or steel crossings.
