Plastic Surgeons are the First in Berks County to Introduce Motiva® High-Tech Breast Implants for Reduced Complications, Better Safety Monitoring

Wyomissing, PA—The team at Berks Plastic Surgery announced that the practice is now offering breast augmentation with the new Motiva® silicone breast implants, which gained FDA-approval in September of 2024. These implants include several innovative safety features that are not available from any other breast implant manufacturer.

“We are thrilled to be among the first plastic surgery practices in the Reading area to offer Motiva® breast implants,” says Brian K. Reedy, MD, the practice’s founder and an award-winning, board-certified plastic surgeon. “We are known for our breast augmentation and ‘mommy makeover’ results, and we take great pride in offering these results as safely as possible. Motiva silicone breast implants improve safety with groundbreaking technology, and it was a no-brainer for us to bring this option to our patients.”

Berks Plastic Surgery in Reading, PA now offers Motiva Breast Implants

Distributed under the parent company Establishment Labs, Motiva uses several proprietary breast implant technologies: a SmoothSilk® outer surface, BluSeal® barrier layer, and Q Inside Safety Technology™ embedded microchip.

The SmoothSilk outer surface is an implant shell designed to be highly biocompatible. Unlike existing smooth and textured implant surfaces, SmoothSilk’s surface technology is designed to reduce friction against the surrounding tissues. In clinical studies, it has been shown to minimize inflammation and reduce bacterial attachment. As a result, patients may have a lower chance of developing a hardened, tightened capsule around their breast implants—a common complication called capsular contracture. Instead, the breasts remain soft and natural-feeling.

“One of our patients’ biggest concerns is developing capsular contracture,” explains Dr. Reedy. “While it does not pose a health risk, it poses a significant cosmetic concern, and severe cases require revision surgery. Reducing this risk is a top priority for both plastic surgeons and patients.”

In addition to the proprietary implant surface, Motiva breast implants are engineered with BluSeal®, a patented barrier layer that safeguards the integrity of the implant from rupture. This technology is intended to help prevent leakage of the silicone gel from inside the implant.

Finally, Motiva’s Q Inside Safety Technology™ is a 12-millimeter chip embedded within each implant. This first-of-its-kind chip allows easy access to detailed implant information using a special reader, ensuring that patients and surgeons can retrieve essential data about the implant’s specifications and warranties throughout the life of the implant.

“The Motiva implant’s innovative features respond to our priorities in the plastic surgery community, including monitoring breast implants over time,” Dr. Reedy says. “Many patients have their implants for decades, so these added measures have the potential to make a difference in patient safety.”

Worldwide complication rates for Motiva breast implants, based on existing studies, are 0.5% for capsular contracture (when scar tissue tightens and hardens around the implant), 0.6% for implant rupture, and 0.9% for infection. Safety studies thus far reported no incidence of BIA-ALCL, a rare lymphoma associated with textured implants. Satisfaction rates are 99% among surgeons and 97.1% among patients.

Patients who receive the new breast implants automatically receive The Motiva® Health Program, a warranty that provides free implant replacement for certain complications and financial assistance for up to 10 years, or the lifetime of the implants. Patients may upgrade to the Motiva® Health Program Plus for $250 to be eligible for free implant replacement after additional complications, as well as more significant financial assistance. And as part of the Plus program, Motiva offers up to $2,500 towards an explant (removal) procedure within two years.

At Berks Plastic Surgery, plastic surgeons Dr. Brian K. Reedy and Dr. Scott C. Lindsay offer two Motiva® implant options for breast augmentation in Reading: SmoothSilk® Round and SmoothSilk Ergonomix®. The round implants are composed of a highly cohesive gel that retains its shape and projection regardless of body position, while the Ergonomix implants contain a viscoelastic gel that mimics natural breast movement, with a round shape when lying down and a teardrop shape when standing upright. The Ergonomix implant may require a shorter incision than the Round implant.

The practice serves patients from Allentown, Reading, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and beyond, offering a full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical services, along with a comprehensive dermatology clinic for a wide variety of skin conditions.
