BioWise Launches Eco-Friendly Pest Control Strategy in Response to London Glue Trap Ban

BioWise launches a new, eco-conscious campaign following the 2024 UK glue trap ban, promoting sustainable, non-lethal pest control across London. As rodent sightings surge, BioWise aims to lead the move from poison to prevention, showing safer solutions can also scale effectively.

-- As rodent sightings rise sharply across the capital, BioWise has launched a new eco-conscious campaign to lead the industry toward humane, scalable pest control in the wake of the UK government’s glue trap ban.

The Glue Traps (Offences) Act 2022, which came into full force on 31 July 2024, makes it a criminal offence for the public to use glue traps to catch rodents and the consequences are serious: up to 51 weeks in prison or unlimited fines based on revenue.

“For years, glue traps were a quick fix that the industry relied on,” says Erviol Hasula, founder of BioWise. “But they’re cruel and often unnecessary. This ban has forced the industry to evolve — and at BioWise, we’ve been investing in smarter, preventative methods.”

Rodent Surge Exposes Over-reliance on Glue Traps

BioWise’s internal data shows rodent call-outs have risen by nearly 50% since the law took effect, with call-outs per 100 clients jumping from 510 in Q4 2024 to 750 by Q2 2025.

Restaurants, cafés, and hotels have been hit hardest — as businesses grapple with changing regulations and outdated pest control strategies.

“The real issue isn’t the ban — it’s that too many pest firms were relying on traps and poisons instead of solving the root cause,” Hasula adds. “At BioWise, we focus on proofing over poison: sealing entry points, structural maintenance and non-lethal traps that prioritise both safety and effectiveness.”

Legal Enforcement Now Underway

The glue trap ban is not symbolic. The Act empowers:

- Police and inspectors to seize traps and search premises

- Courts to order forfeiture of all glue traps found

- Prosecution for anyone who sets, allows, or even fails to disarm a glue trap found in use

Even licensed pest controllers risk criminal charges if they misuse traps or provide false licence applications.

The ban’s rollout has triggered legal and operational confusion across the UK:

- The BPCA (British Pest Control Association) has raised challenges in court over concerns about enforceability and lack of alternatives, saying the Glue Board Act fails to protect animal welfare or public health.

- Birmingham Council faced public backlash after continuing to use glue traps post-ban

- London councils are scrambling to revise procedures due to an increase in pest sightings and a lack of glue trap enforcement from The Metropolitan Police.
