Australia’s Youth In A Mental Health Crisis

The most recently available statistics indicate that one-in-four young Australians, aged between 16 and 24, have contemplated suicide in the last year. Cases of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and eating disorders have also significantly increased when compared to pre-pandemic figures. While young people’s mental health was already a cause for concern before Covid-19, the pandemic and its aftermath only exacerbated issues.

The result has been that, two years on, Australia is now dealing with the severe ramifications of an overburdened mental health sector and an entire generation suffering from mental health decline. As such, mental health issues in young people require serious and immediate intervention.

While other age groups have also reported mental health issues, the significant jump in cases within the youth demographic is attributable to various factors. For one, this age group’s development is directly tied to social interaction with peers and gaining independence outside the home. Such development stalled during the pandemic, and now young people are re-entering the world without being fully equipped to handle what comes their way. For another, isolation, and the potential negative effects of excessive social media use as a counterbalance thereto, may have attributed to this age group’s deteriorating mental health. Given climate change, recessions, and technological disruptions, this generation is also living in a far more uncertain world than their older contemporaries.

While many actively seek out the help of mental health professionals, there is currently a limited number of qualified psychologists, psychiatrists, and counsellors who can manage the increased load. In order to save the lives of young Australians and help them live happily and well, it is necessary to bring awareness to mental health issues plaguing this demographic, make as many services available to them as possible, and train up more mental health professionals to ease the burden currently placed on practitioners.
