Long-Term Care Facilities Push For Visitors To Get Vaccinated & Boosted

As U.S. COVID-related deaths top 1 million and new variants of the virus continue to emerge, one California Medicare health plan is encouraging those visiting residents of long-term care facilities to get vaccinated and boosted. Brand New Day, which offers its specially tailored Select Plan for those living in nursing homes and assisted living environments, says protections must be made to keep the 2.5 million residents living in those facilities safe from the virus.

The CDC reports that more than 200,000 long-term care facility residents and staff have died of COVID since the start of the pandemic. The agency is predicting a surge of new COVID variants that will be classified as “monitored,” “of interest,” “of concern” and “of high consequence.” There is evidence from laboratory studies that some immune responses driven by current vaccines could be less effective against some of these variants so those eligible for COVID-19 boosters should obtain them for added protection against infection and severe disease.

While there are still unknowns about future waves of the virus, we can expect variants to emerge, making the identification, analysis, tracking and testing of COVID-19 paramount.

The Department of Health and Human Services mandates healthcare workers including those at long-term living facilities to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In response, many facilities are starting to require visitors to show proof of vaccination/boosters to ensure the safety of their residents. Though many facilities are responding to the outbreak by restricting visitors to common areas only, promoting social distancing requiring mask-wearing, others are following a growing trend to require them to be double vaccinated and boosted.

Brand New Day works with independent brokers throughout the state and can arrange for an in-person appointment for those wanting to review the plans in their area. Brand New Day is a subsidiary of Bright HealthCare and Bright Health Group.
