Advanced Veterinary Care for Exotic Pets Now Available at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists in Williston, Vermont

The team at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Specialists (BEVS) is proud to announce the opening of a new department dedicated to caring for exotic animals. Just like dogs and cats, exotic pets need veterinary care and should be seen for routine exams, as well as when they are sick or injured.

The Exotics Department team provides wellness/preventative care, nutrition, advanced diagnostics, medical management, and orthopedic and soft tissue surgery for:

  • Small mammals including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and all pocket pets
  • All non-venomous reptiles
  • Most avian species including parrots, raptors, poultry, and waterfowl
  • Some small primates, such as marmosets, lemurs, and squirrel monkeys
  • Wildlife (with valid wildlife rehabilitator permit)

They do not treat venomous snakes, most medium to large primates, adult ratites (ostriches, emus, rheas), or any illegally owned animals. BEVS offers exotic patients access to specialized housing, high-quality digital X-ray, ultrasound, CT, endoscopy, and in-house laboratory and pharmacy.

“We’ve treated a variety of small mammals over the years, and just like our love for dogs and cats, we know exotic animals are also owned and loved by Vermont families,” said Whitney Durivage, MBA, CVPM, BEVS’ Vice President. “Exotic animals need and deserve the same care we give our other pets, and we are excited to provide this unique service to the community.”

The department is run by Dr. Jordan Adair, who has always had a passion for animals and grew up with many exotics pets, especially reptiles. He earned his veterinary degree at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, then completed a one-year combined dog/cat and exotics internship before doing a three-year exotic residency at a large exotic specialty practice in Ohio. Dr. Adair is the only veterinarian in the state of Vermont with such advanced and progressive training in caring for exotic pets. He has a special passion for avian and reptile medicine and surgery.

Exotic care at BEVS is available by appointment Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Same-day appointments are often available. To schedule, call 802-863-2387. No referral is necessary. Pet owners experiencing an emergency with their exotic pet are asked to call before coming to BEVS’ Emergency Department.
