Young Adolf: An Alternate History is a work of fiction in the historical and psychological subgenres, best suited to mature readers. It was penned by author team Frank P Daversa and Joseph V Franciosa Jr. As the title suggests, the work explores the possibilities and child psychology of one of the world’s most hated figures: Adolf Hitler. In this fictional treatise, the authors intermingle the accurate and trying surroundings of young Adolf’s early life alongside his meeting with a young woman just a little older than himself. As this fictional figure enters his life, questions of what might have been begin transposing into a history-altering love story.

This psychologically jarring but very satisfying tale of teenage romance creates a fascinating juxtaposition between the figure history teaches us to hate and the capacity for both good and evil in every human being on the planet. Author team Frank P Daversa and Joseph V Franciosa Jr certainly offer plenty of food for thought throughout this epic and highly readable historical work, blending the accurate austerity of Hitler’s upbringing with the possibility of something more hopeful so well that the work begins to feel real. I also really adored the dialogue, which felt oddly modern in its intentions despite fitting in perfectly with the historical and geographical setting. It will certainly be an acquired taste and perhaps a conflicting read for many, but for me, Young Adolf delivers hope for the human condition and a fascinating ongoing tension that will certainly spark much discussion long after the book is finished."
