The book follows Chief Black Kettle and his adopted daughter, Morning Dove. Together, they work to try to keep the peace as American settlers travel west, wanting to establish ranches, towns, and farms. Their goal is to protect their people from the needless bloodshed that other tribes are experiencing during this era. Clinton McKay, a veteran of the Civil War, re-enlists in the cavalry and crosses paths with Morning Dove. The pair soon develop feelings for one another but fight against them, knowing society wouldn't allow them to be together, as they are on opposite sides of a war.
The book weaves together several standout features that put it in a class of its own. Roberts’ writing is smooth and eloquent, with descriptive imagery that will capture a reader’s imagination. The heroine, Morning Dove, is a compelling role model that readers will look up to and be inspired by.
