Three people died last weekend and several more were critically injured in a devastating 15-passenger van crash on Interstate 75. South Florida-based attorney Jason Chalik urges crash investigators to consider the role defective or aging tires may have played in the wreck as they work to determine the cause of the accident.

“It is so important for the investigators to secure all of the evidence as soon as possible,” Chalik said. “By examining accident debris, like the tire treads, experts can evaluate whether defective tires played a role in Saturday’s deadly crash.”

Sun-Sentinel reports the accident was set off when one of the tires on the van blew out, causing the vehicle to swerve and roll over. Witnesses likened the accident scene to something from a bombing site. They described crash wreckage that included tire treads and other pieces of the destroyed vehicle littered across the highway.

Chalik said accident evidence – including the tire treads and other components – may hold the key to unlocking what caused the tire blowout and subsequent rollover.

“Old or otherwise defective tires can ‘rot’ from the inside out. The damage may not even be visible to the consumer’s eye,” Chalik said. “It’s imperative that investigators and other relevant parties get to examine the dates and other coding on the tires to determine if they were old or otherwise included in a defective tire recall.”

The victims of Saturday’s van crash were members of a Lauderhill-area church group traveling to Tampa for a church convention, according to Sun-Sentinel. A 20-year-old North Lauderdale man was among those killed in the accident. The young man was planning to become a nurse and was studying at Broward College. Another victim, a 2-year-old girl, survived the accident but remains in the hospital with critical injuries.

“Our hearts go out to the victims’ families, the Maranatha Seventh-day Adventist Mission Group and the community as a whole,” Chalik said. “This is a truly devastating event.”

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation to determine what caused Saturday’s crash. The accident took place on northbound I-75 just south of Fort Myers. Investigators will look at whether all 16 passengers were wearing restraints at the time of the accident. They also will examine the overall condition of the van.

A thorough inspection and investigation should consider whether aged, defective, recalled or otherwise dangerous tires played a role in the accident.
