Proprietary AI-powered olfaction technology enables Osmo to rapidly develop new fragrance ingredients transforming fragrance innovation
Osmo, the digital scent design company, today announced that its proprietary Olfactory Intelligence technology led to more published fragrance ingredient patents in 2025 than all of the other major industry players combined. The milestone demonstrates how Osmo’s AI-first approach is reshaping fragrance discovery by enabling the company to explore and analyze billions of potential molecules and identify entirely new ingredient families that traditional methods cannot access, with more precision and speed.
“Osmo is changing the way fragrance molecules are discovered and developed,” said Alex Wiltschko, CEO and Founder of Osmo. “In just two years, we've demonstrated that AI can deliver tangible value in molecular discovery. The question now is no longer whether this technology works, but how industries will adapt to deploy it most effectively.”
The fragrance industry has long relied on a time-consuming and expensive discovery process: chemists create molecules one at a time in the lab, test them with perfumers, and begin again with a very slim success rate (0.25%). It’s a cycle that can take years, significant capital and resources. This traditional approach has pushed many companies to focus on refining existing ingredients rather than discovering new ones. The 2025 patent landscape reflects this shift, with key industry giants publishing zero new ingredient patents, and others dropping significantly over the past several years.
Osmo’s platform spans the entire product lifecycle from formula creation through manufacturing and packaging, but starts with a fundamentally different discovery model. Using Olfactory Intelligence, Osmo screens and analyzes billions of molecules through AI modeling, predicting how they’ll smell, their intensity, their performance in different applications and their safety profile before any physical molecule is created. Only the most promising candidates are then synthesized and tested, dramatically reducing time and cost while increasing success rates.
“Osmo’s Olfactory Intelligence is optimized for speed, novelty, and accuracy, where prediction drives synthesis, not the other way around,” said Ben Amorelli, Director of Chemistry at Osmo. “We’re not just finding individual molecules, we’re discovering entirely new ingredient families. While a traditional patent might cover one or two molecules, ours can include 50 to 250 new molecules built around novel core structures that have never been explored in fragrance.”
With 10x higher success rates compared to industry norms and 5-10x greater cost efficiency in discovery output, Osmo’s approach creates a compounding advantage: each new discovery can unlock an entire family of related ingredients, accelerating innovation over time. The company expects to continue filing new ingredient patents annually while scaling commercial partnerships with global consumer brands.
“As we continue to scale our palette of IP-protected ingredients, a new level of innovation and creativity in scent will be accessible to our brand partners,” said Mike Rytokoski, Chief Commercial Officer at Osmo. “This work serves both global consumer product companies and emerging brands across commercial sectors.”
Applications for Osmo’s Olfactory Intelligence include enabling enterprises to reduce fragrance costs and accelerate time-to-market, while empowering emerging brands to access custom fragrance development at accessible price points.

About Osmo
Osmo is unlocking a new world of fragrance through a combination of proprietary molecular data, machine learning, and human artistry. Olfactory neuroscientist and Harvard PhD Alex Wiltschko launched Osmo in 2022 as a spin-off from Google Brain. In 2024, Osmo achieved Scent Teleportation, the world's first full digitization of scent with no human intervention. Today, the company transmits hundreds of scents per week using safe, environmentally-friendly molecules, and has created the industry's largest structured scent data library. Osmo enables global and emerging brands to reduce fragrance costs, accelerate timelines, and develop unique proprietary molecules through its AI-powered olfaction technology called Olfactory Intelligence. Backed by Lux Capital and Google Ventures, Osmo is building the future of scent. To learn more, visit www.osmo.ai.
