This year’s recipients and their results build upon a more than decade-long trend of increasing adoption of district energy to reliably and efficiently deliver heating and cooling to buildings both here in the U.S. and around the globe. Through voluntary reporting by IDEA member operating systems, the awards and accompanying report measure the square footage served by district energy systems in newly committed buildings and those that have extended a contract with a duration of 10 years or more.
Since 1990, 2.8 billion square feet of building space have been added or renewed to district energy service by IDEA member systems, showing the incredible momentum and value of district energy to communities around the world over the last three decades.
“2023 represented another year of outstanding growth by IDEA member district energy systems, and we are thrilled to recognize their achievements with the District Energy Space Awards,” said Rob Thornton, President & CEO, IDEA. “The increasing numbers of square footage and number of buildings served demonstrates district energy’s staying power and its importance to our cities and campuses of the future.”
On Monday, June 17th at IDEA’s Annual Conference in Orlando, IDEA recognized members from North America and Beyond North America who reported the largest growth in the number of buildings served as well as total square footage added in 2023.
